Beat Babe: Au Revoir, Foie Gras

As you may or may not know, the California ban on foie gras goes into effect July 1. I’m not one to lament foods, particularly something of which the French to English translation is “fat liver,” but my formerly plump, 13 year old self has a lot of feelings about this passing.

Foie

I am young.

You are old.

You made me fat.

How could I still love you?

We had to part.

The days of puff pastry

The days of pasta

The days of crème fraiche

The years have passed.

I’ve turned to salad.

But

Our love still lingers in the back of my mind.

We’ll always have Paris.

But

You’re fat.

So we will have nothing.

Adieu pour toujours.

LOVE YOU. MEAN IT.

I don’t eat Foie Gras because my shaman says it’s bad for my karma.

I may be wrong but I think the ban is because the bird is force fed: “This fattening is typically achieved through gavage (force-feeding corn)” (Wickipedia) The food is forced down the birds throat until the liver swells.
In my mind, the ban may help stop this inhumane practice, (one day).

Foie Gras is the best… I feel bad for Californians that they can no longer experience it!
