Ask Babe: The Tatcha Glow

Dear Babe,

I have been looking for quite some time now, and I have yet to find the perfect skin products to help me glow. I am so sick of name brands like ProActiv…give me a break. I know you are wise with organics, what are some lovely natural products I can use for my complexion?!

Dear Scarface,

You literally could not have emailed me this question at a more perfect moment. The answer to your skin care question is simple: TATCHA. Let me backtrack for a second. If you’ve read my book, White Girl Problems by Babe Walker,  you know that I travel to Japan twice a year and regularly treat myself to a Doctor Fish Pedicure. If you’re not familiar, this involves dipping your feet in a little tub while hundreds of tiny carp fish go to town, nibbling off all the dead skin. It tickles a little bit, and then it feels like your feet are asleep, and then you think you have no feet, and then you’re done and your feet have never looked or felt so amazing. Trust me on this, once you try it, you’ll much prefer it to someone random woman’s frowzy little hands all over your precious lower extremities.

Anywho, on my last trip to Nippon (Japan) while getting my treatment, I was sitting next to the most gorgeous geisha. She was literally the nicest person I’ve ever met in my entire life, even though she didn’t speak a word of English.  We ended up spending the entire day together and all I could think about was how amazing her skin looked. I asked my translator, Miho, to ask my new geisha friend what her skin secrets were. Her response was about 10 hours long and all in Japanese, but when Miho gave it to me in English, this is basically what she said:

Everyone has been held in awe of Japan’s geishas breathtakingly beautiful, porcelain skin, because they use the most precious green teas, Okinawa red algae, rice bran and other time-tested ingredients. Geisha girl said the secrets had been passed down from one generation of geisha to the next, until reaching her face, which accounted for its full-time glow.

I know what you’re thinking, because it’s exactly what I was thinking: Who the hell do I have to fuck to get some tea, algae and rice to put on my face for Christ’s sake? Fortunately for us all, Miho went on to explain that there’s an incredible product that takes all of that geisha magic and puts it in a bottle for you take home and apply to your own visage. It’s called TATCHA, and I made Miho drive me directly to Takashimaya (basically the Tokyo equivalent of Barneys) to pick some up.

Let me just say that I’ve been using products by TATCHA for over a month and I am Ah-Hub-Sessssssssssssed. My skin has never, ever, looked or felt better. I ordered almost every single product TATCHA makes and they came to L.A. in this gorgeous wooden box.

I use the cleansing oil every day to remove makeup, and it’s incredible. I’m also borderline belligerent about using the beauty papers when I feel like I’m looking shiny. They literally remove all the oil on my face without removing any of my makeup. It’s insane. I’m not a science person, I don’t get it, but I love it.

Do you even know what kind of bullshit is usually found in skincare products? Pabas, parabens, PEGs, PPGs, phthalates, formaldehyde (thanks GOOP), taco meat, sperm, all bad stuff. This product has none of that. If you want to look amazingly natural and as organically beautiful as possible, defintely consider using TATCHA’s products. And please let me know how it goes.
